On Saturday the 15th of September, Soulcial Trust and its partners took part to the World Clean Up Day 2018. The event, which took place in the whole country and all around the world, was a success in Siem Reap!
On Saturday the 15th of September 2018, Clean Green Cambodia, as a coordinating partner of the organizers GoGreen Cambodia and Let’s do it!, took part in the World Clean Up day, which was carried out all over Cambodia.
In 2017, over 1.42 million tons of waste was produced across Cambodia. This number grows more and more as the population expands. In addition, waste mostly ends up in landfills where it stays until it decomposes. This process can take up to 500 years, depending on the material. Therefore, waste management and how it is effectively managed is one of the main areas of our work. Our mission includes environmental awareness building, the practice of sorting waste, but most importantly waste reduction. We must acknowledge our responsibility to keep the planet clean, as citizens, consumers and waste producers of Siem Reap.
Starting early in the morning, our team met at 6am at the Royal Gardens with all the volunteers. We formed teams and the Ministry of Environment held a speech.
Over the course of 5 hours, volunteers picked up trash all over the city. Over 400 volunteers joined the Clean Up and made the streets of Siem Reap cleaner, including hotels, restaurants, NGOs, public schools, 20 people from the Department of Environment and 30 people from the City council. With support from the Ministry of Environment, the event also raised awareness on the current state of waste in Cambodia.
A great thanks goes out to one of our partners: GAEA, who took it upon themselves, to collect all the bags over the city and made sure that they were not left behind. We are already planning another Clean Up in October, information will be available in the coming weeks.
